CHAPTER TEN
âI thought he was exaggerating,â Bella said, her gaze skimming over her friend, from the top of her head to her toes and back again. âWhen Jamie came home last night, babbling about your hair and face and clothes, I actually thought he was making a big deal out of nothing.â
âAnd now?â Fallon asked, wanting her friendâs honest opinion of her makeover.
âNow I think I owe him an apology,â Bella said.
âBut what do you think of my new look?â she prompted.
âI think you look fabulous. Not that you donât usually look fabulousâbecause you do,â her friend hastened to clarify. âBut this is a very different look.â
âGood. I wanted something different.â
âButâ¦why?â Bella asked.
âBecause Iâm tired of looking the sameâand of everyone else looking at me the same way.â
âEveryone else?â her friend queried. âOr someone in particular?â
Fallon had always wondered if her friend suspected that she had deeper feelings for Jamie than friendship, but if she did, sheâd never voiced those suspicions aloud. So maybe this was a hint to Fallon that she could finally confide the truth to her friend. But before she could figure out how to say the words, Bella spoke again.
âBecause I heard that Bobby Ray Ellis asked you out on a date.â
She was surprised by her friendâs remark. Not just the fact that Bella was somehow aware of her plans but the obvious enthusiasm in her tone. Almost as if she was steering Fallon toward Bobby Rayâand away from Jamie.
Was her friend trying to subtly warn her that the single dad was a bad bet? Or was Fallon reading too much into a simple comment?
âSoâ¦is it true?â Bella asked.
âItâs true,â Fallon confirmed. âWeâre going to see National Lampoonâs Christmas Vacation tonight.â
Her friend made a face. âAt the high school?â
She nodded.
âThatâs not a real date,â Bella lamented. âHe could at least take you to an actual movie theater in Kalispell for a current feature.â
âI like the Vacation movies,â Fallon told her. âBesides, itâs a long drive back from Kalispell if the date turns out to be a dud.â
Her friend frowned. âBut you donât think it will be a dud, do you? I mean, you do like Bobby Ray, right?â
âSure,â she agreed. âI mean, Iâve always liked Bobby Ray, even if Iâve never liked Bobby Ray.â
âIâm confused,â Bella said. âIf you donât like him, why did you agree to go out with him?â
âBecause he asked and Iâm tired of sitting at home every night,â she admitted.
âThen this whole makeover thing wasnât part of a plan to attract his attention?â
âNo,â Fallon said.
âBut it was part of a plan to attract someoneâs attention,â her friend guessed. âSo whose?â
She shook her head. âIt doesnât matter.â
âSome guys are too blind to see whatâs right in front of their eyes,â Bella said sympathetically. âAnd if your mystery man doesnât know how lucky he would be to have you, then itâs his loss.â
